Codex Dream Skin guide

Restore the default Codex appearance

Remove the active skin, close its local connection, and return to the official Codex launch path.

Short answer

Restore is more than hiding a wallpaper: it closes Dream Skin, restores the saved appearance settings, and reopens Codex without the skin.

01

Save work and choose normal restore

Finish active tasks and save unsent input. Use base-theme restore for ordinary rollback; reserve full config-backup recovery for a demonstrably damaged config.

Expected:You know which work may be interrupted and have chosen the narrow recovery operation.
If this fails:Do not restore while another install, start, verify, or restore operation is running.
02

Restore on macOS

Use the command from the installed Dream Skin folder, not an older downloaded copy. It checks the active Codex app before making changes.

~/.codex/codex-dream-skin-studio/scripts/restore-dream-skin-macos.sh \
  --restore-base-theme --restart-codex
Expected:Dream Skin closes, the previous appearance returns, and Codex reopens normally.
If this fails:If Dream Skin cannot confirm the active Codex process, it keeps the recovery files. Leave ~/Library/Application Support/CodexDreamSkinStudio intact for inspection.
03

Restore on Windows

Run the restore command from the installed Dream Skin folder. PromptRestart asks before closing Codex; add -Uninstall only if you also want Dream Skin shortcuts removed.

powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -File "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\CodexDreamSkin\engine\scripts\restore-dream-skin.ps1" `
  -RestoreBaseTheme -PromptRestart
Expected:The tray and Dream Skin close, the previous appearance returns, and official Codex reopens.
If this fails:If more than one Store version is active or the open process cannot be identified, close known Codex windows manually rather than forcing an unknown process.
04

Confirm Codex is back to normal

Open Codex from its official shortcut. Check Home, a task, menus, and the composer; a hidden background alone is not enough if Dream Skin is still running.

Expected:Codex works with its normal appearance and Dream Skin is no longer active.
If this fails:If normal Codex also fails, the problem is not the theme settings. Record the app version and exact error before making further changes.
