Codex native themes vs Dream Skin
Choose between built-in appearance settings and a separate image-backed skin tool.
Short answer
Use native Codex appearance when color and code-theme settings are enough. Choose Dream Skin only when you need background artwork and translucent layers and are comfortable installing an independent local tool.
Choose native appearance first
Native settings stay inside the official app, require no separate tool, and are simplest to undo. They are the right default for color, typography, and code-theme changes.
Choose Dream Skin for immersive artwork
Dream Skin adds a continuous background and translucent surfaces while preserving native controls. The ZIP supplies the artwork and settings; the installed Dream Skin tool applies them.
Do not mix file formats
A Dream Skin theme.json and image are not automatically a Codex App native theme, a CLI TextMate theme, a VS Code theme, or an application installer.
Compare recovery before aesthetics
Native changes are undone in settings. Dream Skin also has its own Restore command. Practice recovery before adopting it for daily use.
